Nicolás Copérnico (1473-1543), astrónomo polaco, conocido por su teoría Heliocéntrica que había sido descrita ya por Aristarco de Samos, según la cual el Sol se encontraba en el centro del Universo y la Tierra, que giraba una vez al día sobre su eje, completaba cada año una vuelta alrededor de él.
Copérnico nació el 19 de febrero de 1473 en la ciudad de Thorn (hoy Toru), en el seno de una familia de comerciantes y funcionarios municipales.
En 1491, donde comenzó a estudiar la carrera de humanidades; poco tiempo después se trasladó a Italia para estudiar derecho y medicina. En enero de 1497, Copérnico empezó a estudiar derecho canónico en la Universidad de Bolonia. En 1500, Copérnico se doctoró en astronomía en Roma.
A partir de 1504 fue canónigo de la diócesis de Frauenburg.
Sus trabajos de observación astronómica practicados en su mayoría como ayudante en Bolonia del profesor Domenico María de Novara dejan ver su gran capacidad de observación. Fue gran estudioso de los autores clásicos y además se confesó como gran admirador de Ptolomeo cuyo Almagesto estudió concienzudamente. Después de muchos años finalizó su gran trabajo sobre la teoría heliocéntrica en donde explica que no es el Sol el que gira alrededor de la Tierra sino al contrario.
Esta teoría sin embargo también requería de complicados mecanismos para la explicación de los movimientos de los planetas, debido a la perfección de la esfera. Estimulado por algunos amigos Copérnico publica un resumen en manuscrito, en sus comentarios establece su teoría en 6 axiomas, reservando la parte matemática para el trabajo principal que se publicaría bajo el título "Sobre las revoluciones de las esferas celestes".
A partir de aquí la teoría heliocéntrica comenzó a expandirse. Rápidamente surgieron también sus detractores, siendo los primeros los teólogos protestantes aduciendo causas bíblicas. En 1616 La iglesia Católica colocó el trabajo de Copérnico en su lista de libros prohibidos.
La obra de Copérnico sirvió de base para que, más tarde, Galileo, Brahe y Kepler pusieran los cimientos de la astronomía moderna.
